Poll: Is A School Assignment To Come Up With Terrorist Attack Appropriate?

Posted by Casey on May 11, 2009

Students in Pueblo, Colorado have been given a homework assignment to come up with a terrorist attack for history class.

A ninth grade history project at a high school in Pueblo was supposed to teach students about terrorism, but instead it outraged parents.

Gini Fischer says her daughter came home Thursday saying she had two minutes to come up with a plot for an act of terrorism.

I actually had an assignment once in history class where I chose to draw up invasion plans for numerous countries. However, the teacher didn’t require that to be the assignment.

Naturally, the school is saying that the kids misinterpreted the assignment, and that any kid who plots an attack on the school will be punished. They are destroying the assignments as we speak.

Is an assignment like this appropriate for school?

If it is followed up by what positive steps should and could be taken to defeat such an attack.. Then it is completely appropriate..

We show young people the effects of a car accident and explain how it occurred.. Then discuss and instruct how to avoid it..

We teach them what a rip current it and how to deal with it.

We spend years discussing the effects of illicit drugs in order that they may resist that trap..

Teach them to comprehend how a terrorist attack takes place then teach them what they can do to minimize or defeat the attack..

Of course you Ostrich sacks out there probably do not want this because the only effective way is thru increased awareness. Followed by the establishment of security perimeters with Horror of Horror Armed men and women to defend the Children. Just like Israel does everyday to protect their young people..

But then adults are running their schools so Grand Ma checking the IDs of everyone who enters the school ground and Grampa with his buddies, Uzis over their arms a short distance off scares the poop out of the Statists and Elitists who would rather our children be vulnerable to terrorist attack than act like adults and provide real security to protect them..

So it makes sense to leave the children ignorant of the potential dangers. Should they deduce how they and their classmates could easily be defended and conclude the “Responsible Adults” in charge are neither Adults nor Responsible. Now that might be a “real problem” indeed.

I go to this school and I think that showing us how the other side thinks also helps us counter these attacks. People always tell me that we should walk a mile in each others shoes to better understand each other. To protect ourselves shouldn’t we apply the same saying i think that the parents of these students honestly made a big deal about it without thinking about it. The teacher was teaching the parents just need to stay out of it.

So what’s the point of only having two minutes to plot the attack?

“Parents just need to stay out of it??” Yeah.. that’s what they said when they formed the Hitler Youth in Germany. “Your parents don’t know what is best for you.. they need to stay out of it.” Get a grip. Telling the parents to butt out, the teachers know what they are doing, is ignorant. Attitudes like this result in students graduating from our high schools and colleges that believe everything they are spoon fed by their teachers and/or professors, without bothering to question and look at different perspectives.

As for the appropriateness of the assignment? These students are freshmen in high school. Most freshmen in high school are 14-15 years old. Their adolescent minds are not equipped to be able to grasp many of the nuances related to the background of a terrorist attack. In short, the assignment is at best a waste of time, at worst a guide on how to put together a terrorist attack.
