And The Winner For The Dumbest Thing In The Stimulus Package Is …

Posted by Casey on February 2, 2009

Prepare yourself … you’ve been warned.

It’s high time we crowned a winner for the dumbest thing in the Obama/Democrat stimulus package. There are several candidates that would have been worthy of such a dishonor, but there is one that is indisputably stupid … no matter what your political affiliation is.

SEMA is opposing an effort by some Washington lawmakers to include a national car crushing program in the upcoming economic stimulus package. Vehicles targeted for the scrap pile will likely include Chevy Blazers, Silverados, S-10s and Tahoes; Dodge Dakotas and Rams; Ford Explorers and F-Series; Jeep Cherokees and Wranglers; and any other SUV or truck that obtains less than 18 mpg.

Could it be something so retarded as to use taxpayer money to destroy cars? Yes!

Under the plan, the federal government would pay a premium for ’99 and newer cars. Click here to oppose the legislation.

The so-called “Accelerated Retirement of Inefficient Vehicles Act” is “Cash for Clunkers” with a twist. Instead of focusing exclusively on old cars as is typical with scrappage programs, this bill will target any vehicle with lower fuel-economy ratings. Participants will receive a cash voucher to purchase a more fuel-efficient new car or used car (model year 2004 or later) or receive credit for the purchase of public transportation tickets.

Under the legislation, “fuel efficient” means at least 25% better mileage than the CAFE standard. It will be illegal to resell the scrapped vehicles. Bill sponsors want to destroy 4 million pickups and SUVs over the next four years.

The program will fail to achieve its goal of improving fuel efficiency and stimulating car sales, but will increase unemployment and the cost of used cars and parts. Here’s why:

Follow this link for SEMA’s point by point opposition to the proposal.

Essentially, this is the government taking taxpayer’s money to advance the myth of global warming which we all know doesn’t exist.

Most of the vehicles targeted in this legislation are worth more than the max you can get from the government of $4,500. So if you were to participate you would be taking a loss to allow the government to destroy your car. Then you get to go into debt by only getting an average down payment on a highly restrictive list of new cars that are overpriced for the market anyway.

Naturally, this will not accomplish its stated goals. SEMA points out that this could raise the cost of used vehicles due to less supply. That affects poorer families ability to get a car.

To make it illegal to sell these vehicles is the worst kind of stupid. Why not sell them to companies that convert vehicles to other forms of fuel at a discount, and then allow them to sell the converted vehicle for market value? I guess that’s too simple for government.

So who’s responsible for this idea? Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) … shocking, I know.

If it makes you feel better, there is another provision in the stimulus package that addresses cars. The government is giving themselves an additional $600 million for new government cars for a total of $3.6 billion. Most of those new government cars, by the way, are SUV’s.

Actually, global warming does exist (I came upon an adult couple of Egyptian geese today walking thier 10 baby goslings in the snow), and even the US knows it. What the US doesn’t know is just how far it has fallen behind the rest of the first world in terms of energy efficiency, energy savings, and development of alternative energy solutions.

  2. Certainly to the untrained eye, this does not make sense. However, after reading the various storied and watching interviews on TV it is simply that we do not understand. The important thing is that we not question the bill and everybody sign off, they can fix problems later………………

Actually, I agree that this is not only stupid it is yet another piece of the partisan crap that is this bill. Somebody came yup with this pet project, and in the rush to approve a bill so that they can look like they are helping and get what they want. The disdain that our Congress is showing for us is truly shocking. One side just wants to see what they can get away with, the other side is objecting but not going so far as to point out all the waste and give a solution. We need another option.

It doesn’t exist any longer … fact. Read the links in the post, and the US has reduced emissions at a rate far exceeding the Kyoto nations.

    Host,

I’ve read and read and read, and I’m a trained scientist. There are two main points that folks don’t understand about global warming. One is that global warming is about climate, not weather. And the other is the global part. You have to look at what’s happening all over the globe and average it. Some regions, like the UK, will actually cool down, and others will heat up, but either way, the changes are happening faster than genetic changes in the local species can adapt.

    djcnor,
    “and I’m a trained scientist”-
How does that make you qualified to refute another’s findings? There are millions of “trained” scientists in the world that know nothing on the subject…
Further, what you are describing is a NORMAL climatological phenomenon-some get colder as some get warmer, with trends that gradually cause extinctions to species unable to adapt fast enought-to infer that this proves “gobal warming” is erroneous.

Scientific training gives me the ability to read the original scientific literature and understand it. In particular, I know how to examine the design of a study for validity, what statistical tests should be used in particular circumstances, what can be derived and what can’t from a given set of data. As a biochemist, I know the time scales at while genetic adaptation to new conditions occur and more about the interconnectedness of species than non-scientists. “Normal” climatic change does not take place on the time scale that present climatic changes are.

Every agency in the world that monitors atmospheric temperatures says the planet is cooling … for two years in a row now. Yes, some places are cooling while others are warming. It’s the natural process of the poles that has happened for thousands of years before man even existed.

  14. djcnor said

Could you provide references for that? I really doubt that cooling is prevalent even for the last two years, but even two years is not what we’re talking about. Climate change involves longer periods of time than that.

To get a better idea of prevalent scientific opinion, I used the google restriction “scholar” and searched global warming. If you want to restrict your sources farther, you might only read the abstracts of articles in Science and Nature, the two most authoriative scientific journals in the world. The overwhelming weight of evidence favors global warming.
