Yet Another Woman Caught Lying About Being Raped

Posted by Host on September 21, 2008

For those of you who follow these things, you’ll know that an increasing number of woman are being caught lying about being raped. There has always been a problem for men accused of rape in that they are automatically assumed guilty. Over the past several years we’ve been able to clear several men who were serving prison time for rape by using DNA.

Notice: No one is saying that rape is ok, or that it is not a serious problem. I am simply pointing out that women who have been getting away with falsley claiming rape are increasingly getting caught … that is a good thing for everyone.

A Winnipeg man awaiting trial for rape has had all charges dropped after the alleged victim admitted she sent the accused cards and explicit love letters behind bars.

Crown prosecutor Wendy Friesen initially told court earlier this month that the woman adamantly denied sending the letters and that they must have been forgeries.

But after a brief recess, Friesen said the woman changed her story and admitted she had written them.

The woman claimed in the letters that she missed the accused and was pregnant with his child.

The woman had originally claimed the accused broke into her home in October 2007, choked her, forced her to drink alcohol and snort cocaine, and then took advantage of her after she passed out.

Defense lawyer Sheldon Pinx said the woman should be charged with mischief, obstruction of justice or even perjury.

JERUSALEM — Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni wasted no time Sunday working to put together a new government, meeting with potential coalition partners even as outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert formally resigned. Her ability to move fast in her first task could have far-reaching effects on Mideast peace talks.

Livni, who has gained respect for favoring peace deals with the Palestinians and Syria while distancing herself from the unpopular Olmert, would become Israel's second female prime minister after Golda Meir, who served from 1969-1974.

A former lawyer and one-time agent in the Mossad spy agency, Livni has 42 days to form a government.

Yes, Bush Did Warn Everyone About Subprime Lending, & Tried To Fix It.

Posted by Host on September 21, 2008

The Democrats fought him 17 times on subprime reform.

For many years the President and his Administration have not only warned of the systemic consequences of financial turmoil at a housing government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) but also put forward thoughtful plans to reduce the risk that either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac would encounter such difficulties. President Bush publicly called for GSE reform 17 times in 2008 alone before Congress acted. Unfortunately, these warnings went unheeded, as the President's repeated attempts to reform the supervision of these entities were thwarted by the legislative maneuvering of those who emphatically denied there were problems.

It goes on to give you a time line broken down by year of Bush’s attempts to reform subprime lending. It’s still no excuse for his decision to support a $700 billion bailout … including foreign banks.

US To Bail Out Foreign Banks Now?

Posted by Host on September 21, 2008

This is all getting very unsettling. The $700 billion bail out for poor financial practices is horrible enough, but the thought of bailing out foreign banks also is beyond asinine.

In a change from the original proposal sent to Capitol Hill, foreign-based banks with big U.S. operations could qualify for the Treasury Department’s mortgage bailout, according to the fine print of an administration statement Saturday night.

The theory, according to a participant in the negotiations, is that if the goal is to solve a liquidity crisis, it makes no sense to exclude banks that do a lot of lending in the United States.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson confirmed the change on ABC's "This Week," telling George Stephanopoulos that coverage of foreign-based banks is "a distinction without a difference to the American people."

"If a financial institution has business operations in the United States, hires people in the United States, if they are clogged with illiquid assets, they have the same impact on the American people as any other institution," Paulson said.

The US is also asking other countries around the world to start doing their own bailouts. I doubt that it is anything but an attempt to lighten the very dark cloud that is going to cover the US in the near future as a result of all this.

"That's a distinction without a difference to the American people. The key here is protecting the system. ... We have a global financial system, and we are talking very aggressively with other countries around the world and encouraging them to do similar things, and I believe a number of them will. But, remember, this is about protecting the American people and protecting the taxpayers. and the American people don't care who owns the financial institution. If the financial institution in this country has problems, it'll have the same impact whether it's the U.S. or foreign."

The legislative outline that went to Capitol Hill at 1:30 a.m. Saturday had said that an eligible financial institution had to have “its headquarters in the United States.” That would exclude foreign-based institutions with big U.S. operations, such as Barclays, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS.
